Lots of people absolutely love this book. It's my second try at reading Guy Gavriel Kay after The Lions of al-Rassan (last year), which I didn't finish. I like this one so far, but I don't think it will be a favorite. I shared more about the beginning in a Book Beginnings post last week.
This is almost 700 pages, but it is the short version! I started in March I am 63% done, trying to catch up with Ruth who finished it in April. Here is a bit I found interesting:
In the various states of society, armies are recruited from very different motives. Barbarians are urged by the love of war; the citizens of a free republic may be prompted by a principle of duty; the subjects, or at least the nobles, of a monarchy, are animated by a sentiment of honor; but the timid and luxurious inhabitants of a declining empire must be allured into the service by the hopes of profit, or compelled by the dread of punishment.
